Mumbai, Jun 24 (PTI) BJP MLC Pramod Jathar on Wednesday demanded the formation of a wildlife sanctuary on the lines of the Vantara project in Gujarat in the Tilari region of Sindhudurg district, describing the area as the “Amazon of India”.

He said a Vantara-like project, which focuses on wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and safari, could be developed in Tilari, where thousands of acres of forest land already exist.

“In Gujarat, the Ambani family has started the Vanatara rehabilitation project in a desert-like area. A similar model can be implemented in Tilari with 50 per cent area for safari and 50 per cent for rehabilitation of wild animals,” the MLC said.

He highlighted the Tilari region’s rich biodiversity, the presence of tigers and elephants, and claimed that around 5,000 acres of forest land is available for such a project.

“Our forest is as dense as the Amazon forest,” Jathar added.

He also pointed out that the presence of an airport near Tilari would boost tourism.

The MLC claimed that Forest Minister Ganesh Naik responded positively to the proposal in the legislative council and said drones would be deployed for surveying the area.

The minister assured the House that the feasibility of implementing such a project would be examined. PTI ND NSK
