Jaipur, Jul 25 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Police has detained two men from Rajasthan’s Karauli for the theft of a nearly 400-year-old cannon weighing around 3.5 tonnes from the historic Narwar Fort in Shivpuri, officials said on Saturday.
An official of Rajasthan police said that the theft was traced to Gavda Meena village under Hindaun Sadar police station area in Karauli district.
Madhya Pradesh Police detained Timmu Meena and Aman Meena, and also seized a pickup vehicle allegedly linked to the theft.
The cannon was stolen last week. Preliminary investigations revealed that some individuals reached the rear of the fort in a vehicle and fled with the artillery pieces kept there.
Karauli Additional Superintendent of Police Satyendra Pal Singh said that the Madhya Pradesh Police sought assistance in the investigation, following which a joint search operation was carried out in the village.
The police dug at four to five locations on suspicion that the cannon had been buried, but no recovery was made.
JCB excavators and a specialised team equipped with underground metal detectors from Bharatpur were deployed during the search, but the cannon could not be traced.
