Lucknow, Oct 10 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh BJP’s women wing on Saturday staged a protest outside the Congress office here over allegations of sexual harassment against MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and a former professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The women protesters raised slogans against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and tore posters of the party leaders.

The protest was part of a nationwide campaign amid allegations against the Congress MP, who was accused of sexual harassment by 11 female students at the university in Delhi. Following an inquiry, JNU dismissed the professor with immediate effect on October 9.

Reacting to the protest, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Aradhana Misra said tearing posters of Congress leaders reflected the BJP’s “weakness, haste and nervousness”.

She said Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were fighting to protect the Constitution and democracy, adding that tearing posters would not weaken the party’s ideology but strengthen it further.

Misra also questioned the treatment of women Congress workers during a protest, alleging that police personnel had dragged individual workers away using 10 to 12 personnel each. She further alleged that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had been pushed by police and fallen to the ground.

“She is also someone’s daughter and sister,” Misra said, demanding that the incident also be condemned.

The Congress leader also questioned the BJP’s response to alleged gangrape incidents in Delhi, claiming that five such incidents had taken place there within a month. She asked whether any BJP woman office-bearer had spoken out on the incidents and alleged that the prime minister and chief ministers had remained silent.

“We will neither be afraid nor bow down,” Misra said, asserting that the Congress would intensify its fight to protect democracy and the Constitution. PTI CDN SHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
