Thane, Jun 19 (PTI) The Maharashtra excise department has seized Goa-manufactured liquor worth more than Rs 1.63 crore in Thane district and arrested a Rajasthan resident in connection with the alcohol seizure, an official said on Friday.

Acting on inputs, an excise team intercepted a six-wheeler container truck near Vadape village on June 17, he said.

A large stock of liquor meant for sale only in Goa was found concealed inside the vehicle, said Pradeep Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of State Excise, Konkan Division.

“The consignment was accompanied by transport documents indicating that electronic goods were being transported from Udaipur in Rajasthan to a company in Ponda, Goa,” he said.

According to the excise department, officials recovered 77,760 bottles of Royal Banyan whisky of 180 ml capacity, packed in 1,620 boxes and labelled for sale only in Goa. “The seized liquor stock is valued at Rs 1,63,29,600,” Pawar said.

The arrested accused has been identified as Hanuman Mowta Ram (28), a resident of Piru Ka Tala area in Sedwa of Barmer district in Rajasthan.

“A case has been registered against the accused under the Maharashtra Prohibition laws. The vehicle used for transportation of the contraband liquor has also been seized,” the official said. PTI COR NR
