Leh/Jammu, Oct 21 (PTI) Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on Wednesday led the administration and police personnel in paying homage to police martyrs on Police Commemoration Day, remembering their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
Saxena, Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, Director General of Police Anand Jain and senior police officers laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Leh and took the salute during the commemoration ceremony.
Addressing the gathering, Saxena said October 21 was not merely a date on the calendar but an occasion to remember the unwavering courage and supreme sacrifice of police personnel who laid down their lives to safeguard the nation’s security and prosperity.
He said the day held particular significance in Ladakh, a region that had witnessed numerous invasions and conflicts over centuries.
Commending the Ladakh Police for their courage, discipline and unwavering commitment, Saxena said their responsibility extended beyond maintaining law and order.
“Your responsibility is not limited to maintaining law and order; you also serve as a source of reassurance and security for the people,” he said.
The lieutenant governor said Ladakh Police personnel were often among the first to respond during natural disasters, road closures caused by heavy snowfall, incidents involving tourists stranded in high-altitude areas, and emergencies in remote villages.
Their promptness and sensitivity strengthened public trust in the police, he said, adding that a good police force was one where responsibility accompanied the uniform and compassion accompanied authority.
Saxena said Ladakh was progressing in infrastructure, tourism, education, healthcare and livelihood opportunities, but genuine development was possible only in an atmosphere of peace, tranquillity and security.
He said the administration was committed to making the Ladakh Police more modern, capable and people-friendly by strengthening its surveillance systems, communication networks, winter gear, healthcare facilities, housing and policing capabilities.
Urging police personnel to draw inspiration from the sacrifices of martyrs, Saxena called upon them to uphold integrity, sensitivity and dedication in their conduct and ensure that every citizen regarded the police as a friend and a source of support and security.
He urged them to preserve the legacy of the martyrs by keeping their courage alive through their actions, their dedication through their duty and their love through service to the nation.
Saxena extended his congratulations to all officers and personnel of the Ladakh Police for their dedication, hard work and service to the nation.
“October 21 is associated with the incident at Hot Springs, which is located in Ladakh. What could be more meaningful than commemorating this day at the very place where our brave personnel laid down their lives,” DGP Anand Jain said. PTI AB KSI
