Kolkata, Jul 23 (PTI) The CPI(M)-led Left Front on Wednesday took out a procession in Kolkata, protesting against alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in some states.

Alleging that migrant workers were being targeted in some states and a few were even incarcerated or pushed to Bangladesh, despite being Indian citizens, for speaking Bengali, the protesters demanded that the Mamata Banerjee government ensure that their rights are safeguarded.

“The interests of the migrant workers have to be safeguarded,” CPI(M) West Bengal unit secretary and party politburo member Mohammed Salim said, while participating in the procession along with other Left Front leaders.

The rally was taken out from Esplanade to Ramlila Park in central Kolkata, covering around 2 km.

The LF leaders said the state government should take up the issue with the Centre and also with the states where such alleged incidents are taking place.

They demanded a special session of the West Bengal assembly and that a resolution be passed against alleged atrocities on migrant workers from the state in other places.

Addressing the TMC’s annual Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that a movement would start in Bengal from next Sunday to protest against alleged attacks on “Bengalis, Bengali language and linguistic terrorism”.

Opposing the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Salim claimed that the Election Commission cannot hold such an exercise.

“The EC has no authority to hold SIR. EC is doing the bidding of the central government,” he alleged. PTI AMR BDC
