Leh, Apr 15 (PTI) Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday handed over renewed lease deeds to 79 residents of the Housing Colony area in Leh, calling the move a historic step towards ensuring their legal security.

An official spokesman said the renewal of lease deeds, which were pending for several years, will significantly benefit the residents by ensuring legal ownership and security of tenure.

They will also enable access to banking services, including loans, facilitate smoother property transactions, and allow land to be sold at fair market value, he said.

Addressing the beneficiaries who received the renewed deeds in the first phase, Saxena termed the occasion historic, saying the step would ensure legal security, peace of mind, and financial empowerment.

Highlighting that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘housing for all’ and ‘improved ease of living’, Saxena termed the renewal of lease deeds a significant step towards realising this goal by ensuring that citizens have secure housing rights and access to essential services, particularly in a geographically challenging region like Ladakh.

He said special camps were organised to expedite the resolution of pending cases.

The process has been carried out under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Act, 1960, ensuring full legal validity and enabling beneficiaries to access banking services and undertake property transactions, Saxena said.

He assured that similar camps would be organised to clear all pending cases of expired lease deeds to provide relief to people, ensuring that no genuine beneficiary is left behind.

Stazin Otsal, Nambardar, Housing Colony, said some residents, who have been residing in the area since 1975, had expired lease deeds, which prevented them from obtaining banking loans or selling their land.

Sonam Rigzin, Nambardar, Ibex Colony, said around 1,000 families live in the colony, many of whom served in the Indian Army, who will get relief if the administration also takes up their land-related issues. PTI TAS ARI
