Kolkata: The postmortem report of the 31-year-old trainee doctor found murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August indicates she was inflicted with 16 external injuries and 9 internal injuries, and points towards possible “sexual assault”.

A team of three doctors, comprising two women, conducted the examination at the government-run hospital on 9 August between 6.10 pm and 7.10 pm.

The medical officers have stated that death was caused due to the “effects of manual strangulation associated with smothering”.

“Manner of death is homicidal. There is medical evidence of forceful penetration/insertion in her genitalia, possibility of sexual assault,” states the one-page report.

A senior Kolkata police official confirmed that the report in circulation was a copy of the one handed over to the trainee doctor’s parents.

It further lists multiple abrasions on lips, on the left side of the bridge of the nose and on the neck. “All injuries are ante-mortem (before death), showing evidence of vital reactions,” it adds.

While the Kolkata Police, initially tasked with the probe, had given the report only to the parents, it later handed it over with the case diary, evidence and documents to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 13 August following a Calcutta High Court order.

The report also states that a “white thick viscid liquid was (found) inside endocervical canal, which has collected as noted above. Wt-151 gm”.

While the postmortem report was not annexed in the petition filed by the parents before the high court, postmortem details were listed with pointers in paragraph 10 of the plea. The last point in paragraph 10 stated “the presence of 150 mg of semen in the hymen, a quantity suggesting involvement of more than one individual, further corroborating the suspicion of gangrape”.

Speaking to ThePrint, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the parents’ lawyer, said that “there might have been a typographical error, the report says a white liquid and not semen”.

“We will rectify it,” he added.

The medical officers who conducted the postmortem on camera also state in the report that they handed over to the police routine viscera, blood, swabs, hair, nail cuttings and scrapings from both hands, all “sealed and packed”.

  1. Ms. Sreyashi Dey’s sympathy and support lies clearly with Ms. Mamata Banerjee and her government. And it comes across in an obvious way in her articles. Also, a glance at her Twitter (X) account gives credence to the idea that she is an avowed TMC supporter. Might even be a member of the party too.
So much for Mr. Shekhar Gupta’s oft-quoted “un-hyphenated journalism”.
