Kochi, Apr 17 (PTI) Kochi Metro on Friday celebrated World Public Transport Day with a series of events highlighting the importance of developing and maintaining efficient public transport systems as the lifeblood of a city and a fundamental right of its citizens.

In his inaugural speech on the occasion, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) Managing Director Loknath Behera said that the port city’s integrated public transport system is driving its transformation, a press release said.

He pointed out that the integration of metro trains, Water Metro boats, and air-conditioned electric feeder buses operating across the city makes Kochi unique.

Given the growing number of vehicles, which pose significant challenges to the environment and economy, he said public transport systems offer the most effective solution to reduce traffic congestion, travel time, and economic losses.

The event was held at the High Court Terminal Complex of Kochi Water Metro in the presence of senior KMRL and Kochi Water Metro officials, the release said.

Keychains and cards carrying messages promoting integrated public transport were distributed at various locations to metro, Water Metro, and feeder bus passengers.

The event also featured a quiz competition aimed at raising awareness about public transport systems, with prizes awarded to winners, it said. PTI HMP SSK
