Hyderabad, Oct 10 (PTI) Slamming Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s remarks that the Modi government has turned “mother of democracy” into “muzzled democracy”, Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy on Saturday said the comments of the AICC chief are “heights of hypocrisy”.

He said the “ruthless” Congress had imposed the Emergency in 1975, jailed Opposition leaders and journalists, locked downed media houses, “murdered” the Constitution and gagged the press.

“Heights of Hypocrisy:Congress lecturing on democracy and freedom of expression,” Kishan Reddy said.

Students, farmers and the opposition face police action almost on a daily basis under Congress’ own government in Telangana, he alleged.

“The party that once suspended democracy can never claim to be its defender. Before calling India a Muzzled Democracy, Congress must confront its own history. The Constitution is not a political prop,” the senior BJP leader said in a post on X.

The people of India are watching the “theatrics” and will reject the Congress once again, he said. PTI SJR SJR SA

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
