Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 17 (PTI) Kerala Labour and General Education Minister V Sivankutty has written to the Union Labour Minister expressing concern over the alleged crackdown on workers protesting for their demands in the Delhi-NCR region of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
In a statement issued on Friday, the minister urged the Centre to intervene urgently to protect workers’ rights.
“Using police force against workers protesting for wage hikes and statutory benefits is undemocratic,” he said, alleging that false cases are being registered against trade union leaders and arrests carried out by entering villages.
He urged the Centre to direct the states concerned to stop such actions and release those arrested unconditionally.
Sivankutty said Kerala has adopted a strong stand in protecting workers’ rights and has implemented minimum wages across 85 sectors, setting an example for the country.
“Instead of following such models that prioritise workers’ welfare and dignity, suppressing peaceful protests is unfortunate,” he said.
Sivankutty asked the Union Labour Ministry to initiate discussions with workers’ representatives and resolve their legitimate demands. PTI TBA TBA KH
