New Delhi, May 11 (PTI) AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday sought clarity from the Centre on the country’s economic condition after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to reduce spending on fuel, gold, foreign trips and others in view of the West Asia crisis.
“Is this the sound of an approaching economic emergency? Is the country mired in a severe economic crisis? Nothing like this has ever happened in the country before,” the former chief minister of Delhi said.
“The prime minister should lay the truth bare before the nation. After all, what is the real state of the country’s economy?” Kejriwal said in a Hindi post on X.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also expressed concern over the Centre’s economic and trade policies.
He referred to calls for adopting “swadeshi” and said there should be consistency between such appeals and policy decisions related to trade and investment.
He said the proposed India-US trade agreement could impact the agriculture sector.
Addressing a rally in Hyderabad on Sunday, PM Modi called for the judicious use of fuel, postponement of gold purchases and foreign travel, among other measures, to strengthen the economy, while emphasising that the Centre is trying to shield people from the adverse impact of the conflict in West Asia.
Separately, Kejriwal on Monday voiced concern over the alleged NEET examination paper leak, saying repeated incidents were affecting students who were preparing for competitive examinations.
“Every year, seven crore youth appear for examinations for admission into engineering and medical colleges and for government jobs. But paper leak gangs are breaking the trust and morale of these youth,” he said.
He called for strict action against those involved in paper leak cases and said the interests of students should be protected. PTI SHB RT
