Panaji, May 31 (PTI) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday joined the ongoing protest against a proposed mega housing project in North Goa and slammed the ruling BJP for bringing “destructive” initiatives that are against the state’s interests.

According to AAP, the proposed development near Sankhali covers around 130 acres and envisages more than 1,700 residential plots and villas along with a man-made white sand beach.

Questioning the scale of the project, Kejriwal said it would bring an estimated 8,000-10,000 people into a village whose existing population is around 6,500.

Addressing villagers agitating against the proposed mega project, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP government was working for builder lobbies and corporate groups at the expense of local communities and Goa’s environment.

“BJP ministers are involved in selling lands and bringing destructive mega projects that are against Goa’s interests. Such projects help builders earn millions while putting enormous pressure on local resources, infrastructure and public services,” the former Delhi chief minister claimed.

He alleged that large-scale hill cutting and construction activities would threaten traditional occupations such as farming, grazing, cashew cultivation and collection of forest produce.

Kejriwal, accompanied by AAP Goa in-charge Atishi, state president Valmiki Naik, Velim MLA Cruz Silva and other party leaders, expressed solidarity with villagers who have been protesting against the project for nearly two months. PTI RPS BNM
