Nanded, June 28 (PTI) A family from Maharashtra’s Nanded district said on Sunday they were overwhelmed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded their unique wedding initiative during the latest episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
The initiative was undertaken during the wedding of Siddheshwar Petkar on May 20. Instead of spending lavishly on return gifts or other ceremonial expenses, the family chose to insure every resident of Bahadurpura village against accidental death.
The idea was conceived by Siddheshwar and his elder brother, Anup Petkar. Under the initiative, accident insurance worth Rs 1 lakh each was provided to 3,465 villagers, creating a collective insurance cover of more than Rs 33.6 crore.
Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Anup Petkar said the family wanted the joy of the wedding to translate into lasting security for the entire village.
“In rural areas, deaths due to snakebites, lightning strikes and other accidents often leave poor families in severe financial distress. We wanted our family’s happy occasion to become a source of support for the community,” he said.
In his monthly broadcast, PM Modi described the Petkar family’s gesture as an inspiring example of how personal celebrations can be transformed into meaningful social service. PTI COR NSK
