New Delhi: IAS officer-turned-politician Shah Faesal was detained early Wednesday at the international airport in New Delhi by security agencies and was taken back to Kashmir, sources told ThePrint.

The security agencies did not give details on why the former IAS officer, who was the 2010 topper, was detained.

The sources said Faesal, who had Tuesday tweeted that “you can either be a stooge or a separatist now”, was flying abroad.

“He will be questioned in connection with some matter once he is back. We are also looking into why he was flying out of the country,” a source said.

PTI reported that he was detained under the Public Safety Act on arrival at the Srinagar airport.

On Tuesday, Faesal wrote on Twitter, “Kashmir will need a long, sustained, non-violent political mass movement for restoration of the political rights. Abolition of Article 370 has finished the mainstream. Constitutionalists are gone. So you can either be a stooge or a separatist now. No shades of grey.”

Faesal, who is eyeing the next assembly elections, has been making headlines with his tweets on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir since the security clampdown which began on 4 August. The following day the Modi government moved to revoke Article 370 that accorded special status to the state.

The former IAS officer has been able to make statements via social media unlike former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti who are in preventive detention.

On Sunday, Faesal had tweeted that there would be no Eid festivities until “everything that has been stolen and snatched since 1947 is returned back”.
