Mysuru, Oct 18 (PTI) Kambala, the traditional buffalo race rooted in Karnataka’s coastal culture, made its debut at the world-famous Mysuru Dasara celebrations this year.

Mysuru district in-charge Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah inaugurated the event on Sunday by flagging off the races organised by the district administration near VTU College in Sathagalli here.

The decision to hold Kambala during Mysuru Dasara has drawn strong objections from some sections of the city, including prominent citizens.

Several organisations and leaders, among them Mysuru royal family scion and MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, have opposed the move, contending that Kambala is incompatible with the heritage, cultural identity and religious significance of the Dasara festival.

Speaking on the occasion, Yathindra expressed hope that Kambala would gain global recognition on a par with the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

He said the event was organised at the initiative of Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar to promote the traditional sport of the coastal region, particularly Dakshina Kannada district, and familiarise the younger generation with Karnataka’s rich cultural diversity.

The minister said it was encouraging to see more than 150 pairs of buffaloes arriving from the coastal region to participate in the event.

He said special arrangements had been made for the well-being of the participating animals, with adequate fodder and food provided alongside dedicated veterinary services.

The district administration had also put in place basic amenities for the large number of spectators and sports enthusiasts expected to attend the races.

Originating in the Tulu Nadu region some 600-700 years ago, Kambala is a traditional buffalo race held in the post-harvest season as a form of recreation and thanksgiving to the deities. PTI KSU

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
