Jammu, Jun 19 (PTI) Several leaders and workers from the BJP and other political parties in Reasi district joined the Indian National Congress on Friday in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra, who said the development reflects growing faith in the party’s ideology of justice, equality and inclusive development.
The joining programme, organised by Reasi District Congress Committee president Ajay Salalia, coincided with the birthday of senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Welcoming the new entrants into the party fold, Karra said that Rahul Gandhi’s vision of “Mohabbat Ki Dukan” had inspired people across the country and strengthened the Congress at the grassroots level through its message of love, unity, harmony and brotherhood.
“The increasing number of people joining the Congress is a clear indication of a changing India, where people are looking towards Congress as an alternative that stands for democratic values, justice and inclusive development,” Karra said.
He asserted that the growing support for the Congress reflected people’s desire for positive change and a stronger, more united nation.
Karra also said the party’s campaign for restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, launched over a year-and-a-half ago, was now receiving support from various quarters and political parties.
“It was the Congress which initiated the movement and organised programmes such as Srinagar Chalo, Jammu Chalo and Delhi Chalo to intensify the struggle for statehood,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Jammu and Kashmir Congress working president Raman Bhalla said the party had always remained committed to serving people and safeguarding the interests of the common man.
“The Congress is duty-bound to address the aspirations of the people and has historically implemented transformative programmes aimed at improving the lives of citizens, particularly those living in remote and backward areas,” Bhalla said.
Former minister Jugal Kishore accused the BJP-led government of pursuing anti-poor, anti-youth and anti-farmer policies, alleging that unemployment, inflation and developmental challenges had increased significantly during its tenure.
He said the Congress remained committed to equitable development and empowering people across all sections of society.
DCC president Ajay Salalia said the party’s doors were open to all those willing to contribute to the political discourse and development of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Congress is committed to the people’s cause and will always uphold their aspirations and sentiments,” he said.
Among those who joined the Congress were BJP district spokesperson and Panchayati Raj president Pritam Sharma, BJP district OBC chairman Sher Singh, retired teacher Ashok Kumar, BJP Mandal vice-president Rafiq, and party workers Arshad, Gurvinder Singh, Parkash Singh, Jagdish Raj, Om Prakash, Sat Pal, Chamail Singh, Krishan Lal, Mulkh Raj, Liaqat, Mohammad Azam, Abdul Shakoor, Altaf Ahmed, Usman Majid, Prabh Dayal, Mohammad Yousaf, Khadam Hussain and Abid Hussain.
