Faridabad, Jun 29 (PTI) An IT engineer, accused of printing counterfeit currency notes in a hotel room, was arrested and sent to a two-day police remand after he was produced before a court here, police said on Monday.

A laptop, a printer, special paper used for printing currency, one counterfeit note of Rs 500 and 10 counterfeit notes of Rs 100 were found in the hotel room, where he had been staying for two days prior to his arrest, they said.

Other materials related to the production of counterfeit currency were also recovered, they added.

According to police, the accused was identified as Vinayak Jha, a resident of Sector 17, Faridabad. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused is a graduate of VIT Bengaluru and works in the IT sector at a multinational company based in Noida.

The Faridabad police received information on Monday about suspicious activity reported from a room at a hotel here. A team arrived at the scene, but no one was present in the room. Subsequently, police searched the room and discovered the counterfeit notes, along with the other material, officials said.

Police seized all the items, and an FIR was registered at Surajkund police station, they added.

A senior police officer said the engineer had been staying at the hotel for two days, but disappeared after locking the room, and the hotel staff called the police after becoming suspicious.

The hotel’s registers and records revealed that the room was booked by Jha, and he was arrested soon after.

“The investigation into the case has been handed over to the Crime Branch NIT team. The police are trying to determine how the accused became involved in such activities despite being highly educated.

“Technical examinations will be conducted on the recovered laptop, printer, and other electronic devices. We are working to uncover the entire network and identify other individuals involved,” a Faridabad police spokesperson said. PTI COR PRK
