New Delhi, Nov 5 (PTI) Delhi Police has busted an alleged organised insurance-related cyber fraud syndicate operating from west Delhi’s Janakpuri area and apprehended 43 people, including 32 women, during a raid, an official said on Thursday.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday night following a tip-off about a call centre allegedly involved in cheating insurance policyholders by impersonating representatives of insurance companies, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Hareshwar V Swami said.
Those apprehended include the owner, managerial staff and telecallers working at the premises. Five of them, including the alleged kingpin, have been arrested, while the remaining 38 are telecallers, police said.
The alleged kingpin has been identified as Vishal Kapoor (35), a resident of Greater Faridabad in Haryana. The other arrested accused are Nitin Sharma (39), who worked as an administrator; Gunjan (23), the HR manager; Ajay (24), an assistant manager; and Bheem (35), a manager, they said.
During the raid, police found employees seated at workstations and making calls through keypad mobile phones. “They were allegedly contacting policyholders of various insurance companies, including PNB MetLife, SBI Insurance, ICICI Lombard and Bharti AXA, while posing as representatives of the respective companies,” the DCP said.
The callers allegedly offered policyholders upgrades, additional insurance benefits and attractive schemes to lure them into making payments. Interested customers were then referred to managerial and administrative staff, who allegedly negotiated deals and forwarded their details to the owner, police said.
The owner allegedly procured policyholder data and contact numbers and supplied them to the telecallers. He also coordinated final transactions and provided bank account details for transferring money, they said.
During the inquiry, the owner and administrative staff failed to produce any satisfactory authorisation documents from banks or insurance companies to substantiate their authority to contact policyholders or obtain their personal data, police said.
Employee identity cards bearing the name “AMSR Wealth Creators Pvt Ltd” were being used at the premises. An online group titled “AMSR Daily Reporting” was allegedly used to share daily work updates and customer leads. Employees were reportedly paid their salaries exclusively in cash, they added.
Police said two bank accounts found in the owner’s mobile phone were linked to five cybercrime complaints registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
A total of Rs 2 lakh in cash, 48 mobile phones, including 40 keypad phones and eight smartphones, one laptop, 38 SIM cards and 22 debit, credit and payment cards were seized during the raid.
Police also recovered 619 sheets containing customer and policyholder details, 67 registers and notebooks containing customer information, and 38 purported company identity cards.
An FIR has been registered at Janakpuri police station under sections 318(4) (Cheating), 61(2) (Criminal conspiracy) and 3(5) (Common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Further investigation is underway to examine the seized devices and records, trace the source of the policyholder data, verify the linked bank accounts and identify the affected customers, police said. PTI SSJ
