Indore, Jul 24 (PTI) A 22-year-old woman gave birth to a girl with two heads and a single torso at a government hospital in Indore, officials said on Thursday, adding that doctors were making all efforts to save the newborn.

The baby girl was born through a caesarean section on Tuesday at Maharaja Tukojirao Hospital, weighing 2.8 kg. She was immediately admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

“She is gasping to breathe and facing other health issues due to congenital deformities. The baby has been placed on life support,” senior pediatrician Dr Nilesh Jain told PTI.

The infant has two hearts, one of which is significantly underdeveloped while the other shows considerable abnormalities, he said.

“In such cases, chances of long-term survival are extremely slim and surgical intervention is usually not feasible,” said Dr Jain.

The condition where two heads are fused to a single torso occurs in approximately one in every two lakh births, the doctor said. PTI HWP LAL KRK
