New Delhi: New Delhi will host the first-ever Asian Buddhist Summit (ABS) on November 5-6, bringing together prominent Buddhist leaders, scholars, and practitioners from across the continent. The summit, themed “Role of Buddha Dhamma in Strengthening Asia,” is organized by the Indian Ministry of Culture in partnership with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), a PIB press release stated.

The summit aims to foster dialogue and understanding among Buddhist communities while addressing contemporary challenges faced by the religion. Discussions will center on key themes, including Buddhist art, architecture, heritage, the significance of Buddhist relics, and the role of Buddha Dhamma in scientific research and well-being.

The event is expected to be attended by the President of India as the Chief Guest, highlighting the significance of the summit. It aligns with India’s Act East and Neighborhood First Policies, emphasizing collective, inclusive, and spiritual development in Asia.

The ABS will also feature a special exhibition titled “India as the Dhamma Setu (Bridge) Connecting Asia,” showcasing the nation’s rich Buddhist heritage. The summit represents a continuation of India’s ongoing efforts to promote and preserve Buddhist culture, including initiatives like the Buddhist Tourism Circuit, the Global Buddhist Summit 2023, and the International Conference on Share Buddhist Heritage.

India’s deep-rooted connection to Buddhism dates back to the 6th century BCE when Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment and began sharing his teachings. The Mauryan Emperor Ashoka played a crucial role in propagating Buddhism across Asia, establishing its principles as a cornerstone of his governance.

The summit underscores the profound impact of Buddha Dhamma on Asian cultures, highlighting its enduring relevance in contemporary society. Through these discussions and cultural exchanges, the ABS aims to contribute to a more compassionate, sustainable, and peaceful world.
