Chatra (Jharkhand), Sep 30 (PTI) The Excise Department has busted an illegal liquor manufacturing unit in Jharkhand’s Chatra district and seized close to 400 cartons of counterfeit booze worth more than Rs 50 lakh, officials said on Wednesday.
The raid was carried out at a house in Aurva village on Tuesday following a tip-off, and it resulted in the seizure of 391 cartons containing 9,888 bottles of liquor of different brands, Chatra Superintendent of Excise Prem Prakash Oraon said.
“Besides, 1,560 litres of raw spirit, around 2,000 litres of prepared coloured liquor, 40 litres of caramel, and a large number of labels, caps, adhesives and empty bottles were recovered. Three bottle punching machines were also seized,” he said.
“The bottles were to be supplied to the neighbouring dry state of Bihar during the festive season. The estimated market value of the seized liquor is more than Rs 50 lakh, Oraon said.
During the raid, the person operating the illegal manufacturing unit managed to flee.
However, police identified the accused and registered a case against three under the Jharkhand Excise Act. PTI COR RPS RPS NSD
