Raipur, Oct 17 (PTI) Two contractors allegedly duped nine beneficiaries from the Baiga tribal community of Rs 5.09 lakh by failing to build their houses under the PM JANMAN housing scheme in Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district, officials said on Saturday.

Earlier this week, police registered separate first information reports (FIRs) at Chilphi and Taregaon Jungle police stations in connection with complaints that the contractors had collected money from the beneficiaries but did not build their homes, they said.

The matter came to light after the beneficiaries, who belong to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), approached the police, alleging that the contractors took their funds nearly 18 months ago but abandoned the construction.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma said irregularities, negligence, and cheating under the PM housing schemes will not be tolerated and strict legal action will be taken against those responsible, an official statement said.

As per the case registered at Chilphi police station, contractor Kumar Meravi allegedly collected Rs 3.2 lakh from five beneficiaries in Rajadhar gram panchayat in Bodla development block, but did not undertake any work for one and a half years.

In another case, contractor Tumesh God had taken money from four beneficiaries in the Amanara gram panchayat in the district but did not construct their homes.

The deputy chief minister noted that building houses for families belonging to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) is a priority under the PM JANMAN Yojana. PTI TKP ARU

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
