Holding parliament session during polls ‘unnecessary’: Kanimozhi

Chennai, Apr 15 (PTI) DMK leader Kanimozhi on Wednesday said convening a parliament session when Assembly elections are being held in a few states was “unnecessary”.

A special three-day sitting of Parliament will be held from April 16 to 18, during which the women’s reservation bill, along with the Constitution amendment bill, will be taken up for consideration and passage.

Addressing an election rally at Harbour constituency in Chennai, Kanimozhi said even though all opposition parties requested the Centre not to hold the session during election time, they (Centre) ignored it and called for a three-day parliamentary session, which was “unnecessary”.

“First, they (Centre) will be introducing a women’s reservation bill and next, they have proposed passing delimitation bill,” she said.

Pointing out that the women’s reservation bill is something that everyone welcomes, and the DMK is also demanding it, Kanimozhi said, “We demand 33 per cent reservation for women in the parliament. However, in the name of delimitation, the Centre is trying to reduce the number of MPs in Tamil Nadu,” she claimed.

Alleging that the BJP-led Centre is also trying to increase the constituencies in the northern states, the Lok Sabha member said, “We cannot speak or argue for the state in the parliament when our MPs are reduced…” At present, Tamil Nadu has 39 Lok Sabha seats.

Stating that Tamil Nadu will “rise and fight” with one voice against the proposed delimitation, the DMK deputy general secretary said, “The party has appealed to the people to a hoist black flag in their houses on Thursday to show solidarity”.

She further said that the people of Tamil Nadu will teach the Centre a lesson through the Assembly election to be held on April 23.

Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday announced a state-wide black flag agitation on April 16 against the proposed delimitation exercise and warned the Centre of consequences and a “heavy price” if it did not heed to Tamil Nadu’s voice.

Kanimozhi also came down heavily on AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami, who stated that the delimitation will not affect Tamil Nadu.

She alleged that Palaniswami had not fulfilled promises made to the people by the AIADMK during its last tenure.

“The AIADMK promised to provide free mobile phones in its election manifesto. However, not even a single mobile phone was given. I am still searching for the single person who received the phone,” she said.

During her campaigning in several areas across the city, Kanimozhi highlighted the welfare measures introduced by the DMK government and explained the party’s 2026 election manifesto. PTI SNR SNR KH
