New Delhi: A Delhi Police beat constable succumbed to his injuries after being dragged for nearly 10 metres in the capital’s Nangloi area late last night in what appears to be an incident of road rage. A 2018-batch recruit, the constable is survived by his mother, wife and 5-year-old son.
According to the police, constable Sandeep (30) was in civilian clothes and headed towards the railway station during duty hours—at around 2.15 am, on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday—to check on instances of burglary in the area when the incident took place.
The police version suggests constable Sandeep was on his bike when he spotted a Wagon R car being driven recklessly. He pulled up beside the car and asked the driver to slow down and drive carefully. But the driver tried to overtake him, and ended up hitting his bike from behind.
The man behind the wheel of the Wagon R then dragged the police constable and his bike for nearly 10 metres before hitting another vehicle.
Constable Sandeep was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to head injuries.
A case has been registered under section 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Nangloi police station.
One of the accused in the case, Rajnish alias Sattu from Noida, who was present inside the car at the time of the accident. Rajnish runs a kirana store, the police say, addinf that he has no previous involvements.
“There were two people in the car,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Jimmy Chiram.
Police also said that the accused abandoned the car after at the scene of the crime and fled and that the car has been seized.
They added that footage retrieved from CCTV cameras along the route show constable Sandeep taking a left turn into a street and indicating to the driver of the Wagon R to slow down.
