New Delhi: A Delhi police beat constable succumbed to injuries after being dragged in the capital’s Nangloi area late last night for nearly 10 metres, in what appears to be an incident of road rage. A 2018-batch recruit, the constable is survived by mother, wife and five-year-old son.

According to the police, constable Sandeep (30) was in civilian clothes and headed towards the railway station during duty hours to check on instances of burglary in the area when the incident took place, around 2.15 AM on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

The police version suggests constable Sandeep was on his bike when he spotted a Wagon R being driven recklessly. He pulled up beside the car and asked the driver not to do so. But the driver tried to overtake him, and ended up hitting his bike from behind.

The man behind the wheel of the Wagon R then dragged the police constable and his bike for nearly 10 metres before hitting another vehicle.

Constable Sandeep was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to head injuries.

A case has been registered under section 103 (murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Nangloi police station, but no arrests have been made yet.

“There were two people in the car. They are absconding,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Jimmy Chiram.

Police also said that the accused abandoned the car after at the scene of the crime and fled and that the car has been seized.

They added that footage retrieved from CCTV cameras along the route show constable Sandeep taking a left turn into a street and indicating to the driver of the Wagon R to slow down.
