Guwahati, Jul 23 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday condoled the death of theatre doyen Ratan Thiyam and termed him as the “brilliant ambassador” of the rich culture of Northeast.

Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi also expressed his grief over the death of the theatre personality and said Thiyam’s legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Thiyam, a theatre luminary from Manipur, breathed his last at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal early on Wednesday. He was 77.

“My deepest condolences on his demise. Om Shanti!” the CM said.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Ratan Thiyam – legendary theatre maestro, visionary artist, and pioneer of India’s ‘theatre of roots’ movement. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” Gogoi said in a post on X.
