Shimla, Jun 9 (PTI) A leopard attacked a herd of sheep camping at night in the Garhnallah area of Chamba district’s Pulan Gram Panchayat, killing 16 sheep while six more remain missing, a local social worker said on Tuesday.

Shepherd Chaman Singh, who was in the higher reaches for grazing, was present at the camp when a the leopard attack on Monday night caused frightened sheep to run helter-skelter.

In the morning, 16 sheep were found dead, and six were missing, Deep Thakur, the social worker said.

The incident has caused panic in the region, and the locals have urged the local administration to take necessary steps for the safety of shepherds and their animals.

Thakur also urged the administration to give adequate compensation to Singh.

It is a usual practice for shepherds here to move to alpine pasture during the summer for grazing herds with abundant, high-quality grass and stay there till the onset of winters. PTI BPL PRK
