Nainital, Apr 23 (PTI) The Uttarakhand High Court on Thursday directed the Union and state governments to file responses within four weeks to a petition challenging land acquisition for a 10-kilometre four-lane highway project.
A division bench of Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Subhash Upadhyay issued the order while hearing a plea filed by Ramnagar resident Jagmohan Rawat and others.
The petition challenges central government notifications issued in July 2024 and July 2025 regarding the highway stretch between Ramnagar and Kashipur.
The petitioners claimed that the notifications wrongly categorised the land on both sides of the road as agricultural property.
They contended that the ground reality reflects the presence of numerous houses and commercial establishments rather than farmland. Affected persons are suffering financial losses as compensation is being assessed at lower agricultural rates, the plea argued.
The petitioners further claimed that the acquisition process has adversely impacted their livelihoods and lacks clarity regarding whose land is being acquired. PTI COR AKY AKY MNK MNK
