Aizawl, Jun 29 (PTI) Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh and Chief Minister Lalduhoma have called on the people of the state to preserve the hard-earned peace that has transformed the state over the past four decades, saying peace is the foundation for all progress.
Mizoram will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the signing of the historic peace accord on Tuesday.
Greeting people on the eve of ‘Remana N0’ (Peace accord day) on Monday, both leaders paid tribute to the architects of the 1986 peace accord and those who sacrificed their lives for Mizoram, while urging citizens to build on the legacy of peace through unity, development and inclusive progress.
The governor described the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord on June 30, 1986, as a watershed moment that ended years of conflict and ushered in an era of reconciliation, stability and development.
He paid tribute to the visionary leaders, civil society organisations, churches, elders and every individual who contributed to restoring peace, and offered special homage to those who laid down their lives for the cause of Mizoram.
“Peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but it creates the foundation for human rights, democracy, trust, tolerance and brotherhood. In a world increasingly marked by inequality and uncertainty, peaceful coexistence remains the only viable path forward,” Singh said.
Calling peace Mizoram’s “precious gift,” he urged people to remain united and vigilant in protecting the state’s strong social fabric.
He said lasting peace must continue to serve as the foundation for progress in education, healthcare, infrastructure, economic growth, innovation, investment and cultural development.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma, in his message, extended greetings to the people of Mizoram and Zo communities across the world, while paying homage to all those who sacrificed their lives for the state and its people.
Recalling the two decades of insurgency, the chief minister said development had remained virtually at a standstill until peace was restored in 1986.
“It was only after peace and stability were restored through the peace accord that Mizoram could embark on a steady path of progress,” he said.
He said that the state’s continued advancement depends on preserving peace and harmony.
Highlighting Mizoram’s achievements over the past four decades, Lalduhoma noted that the state has become fully literate, ranks among the best-performing states in the North East in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and is recognised as one of the happiest states in terms of livelihood and well-being.
Lalduhoma outlined major infrastructure projects currently underway, including the extension of railway connectivity to Sairang and the proposed expansion to Thenzawl.
He also highlighted the ongoing construction of the Vairengte-Sairang four-lane National Highway, along with several National Highway projects being implemented across the state.
He expressed confidence that Mizoram would witness several major development initiatives in the coming years, made possible by the peaceful environment created through the peace accord. PTI CORR RG
