Gurugram, Apr 20 (PTI) Police with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority on Monday reclaimed half an acre of government land illegally occupied by a “notorious criminal” in Sector 63 here, officials said.

The land had been illegally occupied by Nitesh alias Bandar, a resident of Kadarpur village. He had been collecting rent after building approximately 50 huts on the land, valued at around Rs 25 crore, they added.

A senior police officer said the site had become a hub of unauthorised activities, including nearly 50 illegal jhuggies, two scrap godowns, and multiple unauthorised borewells.

These borewells were allegedly used to run an illegal water supply network in the area by the accused.

According to the police, the accused has a criminal history that includes serious crimes like assault, snatching, kidnapping and extortion.

The site was marked by the police and inspected twice by DTP (Enforcement), GMDA, R S Batth, following which a comprehensive strategy was developed to clear the encroachments.

The demolition drive was carried out with the support of a large joint team comprising officials from GMDA’s Enforcement Wing, Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), CIA Sector 31 unit, and Police Station Sector 65, the officials said.

Nearly 100 police personnel were deployed on-site to maintain law and order and ensure the operation proceeded without incident, Batth said. APL
