Surat, Aug 9 (PTI) Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday said the state’s textile businesses have a golden opportunity to compete with other countries with the help of free trade agreements (FTA).
He was speaking to reporters after participating in the annual general meeting of the Federation of Surat Trade & Textile Associations (FOSTTA). Surat is considered a major textile hub in the country.
“Due to the free trade agreements signed with several countries under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, textile businesses in the South Gujarat region, Surat and Ahmedabad have a golden opportunity to compete in global markets,” he said.
He said the state government under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has formulated a textile policy that is benefiting those associated with the sector.
“Due to the policy, many textile and garment units have opened in the Dang and Surat belt, which is generating employment for tribal people,” Sanghavi said.
Efforts are being made to increase job opportunities for women in the textile industry and ensure their continued involvement, he said.
Sanghavi also spoke to representatives from Surat’s trade, textile, and industrial sectors at the FOSTTA annual general meeting.
