Ahmedabad, Sep 17 (PTI) The Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) on Thursday said it conducted a special inspection drive covering 151 hostels and canteens across the state and issued improvement notices to 33 of them.

The action came after a recent food poisoning incident at a hostel in Surat, following which Health Minister Praful Pansheriya directed the regulator to conduct a special drive to inspect private and government-run hostels and canteens to check food quality and hygiene standards.

“During the statewide special drive on Thursday, a total of 151 hostels/canteens were inspected till 6 pm, including 25 government hostels/canteens, 20 semi-government hostels/canteens and 106 private hostels/canteens. Improvement notices were issued to 33 operators and 23 food samples were collected for testing,” Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration said in a release.

Improvement notices were issued wherever deficiencies related to hygiene, food safety and quality were found, with operators being directed to take necessary corrective measures, it added.

Further testing and analysis of the collected food samples will be carried out, the release informed. PTI KVM BNM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
