Ahmedabad, Jul 3(PTI) The opposition Congress on Monday demanded that the BJP government in Gujarat announce a “generous” compensation package for farmers from Ghed region of Porbandar and Junagadh districts who suffered losses due to heavy rains.

Accusing the BJP government of not doing enough to divert flood waters into the sea, Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil said a delegation will visit the Ghed region to take stock of the ground situation and extend all possible help to the affected people and farmers.

“Farmers of Ghed region have suffered a huge loss due to waterlogging in their fields following heavy rains. Moreover, seeds sown in the fields and fertile soil have been washed away. This could have been avoided if the government had made adequate arrangements in advance to stop the water from entering fields by diverting it into the sea. But it seems that work was done on paper only,” Gohil said in a statement.

Flood waters have also destroyed internal roads, trees and kutcha houses in the region, he said.

“To take stock of the ground situation and assess the losses, a Congress delegation will visit Ghed region. Our leaders and workers will also try to help people there during the visit, starting today. We demand that the government announce a generous compensation package for the affected farmers and pay cash doles to affected people,” the Congress leader said.

The delegation will be led by Porbandar MLA and former Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia, who will be accompanied by MLAs Vimal Chudasama and Arvind Ladani and former MLA Babu Vaja, he said.

Though rain took a break in Gujarat on Monday after a heavy spell last week, Mendarda taluka of Junagadh district received 120 mm rainfall in 24 hours, ending at 6 am, the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) said.

As per the SEOC release, Mendarda was followed by Talala of Gir Somnath district (87 mm), Valia taluka of Bharuch (65 mm), Mangrol in Junagadh (59 mm) and 41 mm each in Keshod and Vanthali taluka of Junagadh.

Gujarat has so far received 32 per cent of average annual rainfall, it stated.

The Kutch zone has already received 87.44 per cent rain, followed by 46.91 per cent in Saurashtra zone, 29.29 per cent in north zone, 26.09 per cent in south zone and 20.40 in east zone, the release said. PTI PJT PD ARU
