Mahesana, Dec 8 (PTI) Mukeshkumar Patel of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday defeated Congress candidate P K Patel in Mahesana assembly constituency of Gujarat by 45794 votes.

After 20 rounds of counting of votes, the BJP nominee had polled 98127 votes compared to the 52403 votes secured by the Congress nominee.

Mahesana was the epicentre of Patidar agitation in last assembly polls and former Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat Nitin Patel represented the seat in the outgoing Assembly.

Mehsana Lok Sabha segment was one of the two Lok Sabha segments which BJP had won in the entire country during 1984 elections, which Congress swept after assassination of Indira Gandhi.

The BJP fielded Mukesh Patel, its Mehsana city unit president, from the segment. Considered a protege of Nitin Patel, Mukesh sought votes in the name of the former deputy chief minister.

This assembly seat has been with BJP since 1990 and the party was able to retain it in the 2017 assembly polls as well, at the peak of the patidar agitation.

In this patidar dominated seat, the community has traditionally sided with BJP. AAP’s entry this time had added another dimension in this usually bipolar assembly segment.

Now with no-patidar agitation this time, the community is firmly with BJP and ensured the party’s victory. PTI JTR PD VT VT VT
