New Delhi, Jul 9 (PTI) In the wake of the nationwide general strike, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday called on the BJP-led Central government to listen to the voices speaking against the labour codes.
The strike, called by a forum of 10 central trade unions, was observed on Wednesday to protest against the new labour codes, privatisation and other policies of the Central government.
The CPI(M) congratulated the “working class” for a “successful” general strike.
“The BJP-led Central government should listen to the voices against the labour codes and its anti-worker policies. It should immediately rescind the amendments to the labour laws and protect the rights of the working class,” the CPI(M) said in a statement.
The party also claimed there were reports that the police resorted to lathi charge in various places and alleged attempts to intimidate workers from participating in the strike.
“Braving all such attacks, the strike was held successfully. Kisan, agricultural workers and various sections of the people too joined the workers in solidarity and held protest demonstrations,” they said.
Employees and workers associated with 10 central trade unions went on a day-long strike on Wednesday, however, essential services remained unaffected.
There were reports of the strike impacting a select few services in Kerala, Jharkhand, and Puducherry.
The unions’ demands include doing away with the four labour codes, contractualisation, privatisation of PSUs, increasing minimum wages to Rs 26,000 per month, as well as the demands of farmer organisations for minimum support price for crops based on the Swaminathan Commission’s formula of C2 plus 50 per cent, and loan waiver for farmers.
