Megha Sharma called the police after being allegedly harassed by a guard, and was forced to strip because she was being ‘dragged’ to the police station.

Mumbai: A Mumbai-based model’s desire for a late-night smoke ended in a tussle with her security guards and an altercation with the city police last week. Alleging harassment by a group of men inside her apartment complex, she claimed she had to strip in front of policemen as a last resort.

Model Megha Sharma, who lives in an upscale apartment complex in Mumbai’s western suburbs, allegedly assaulted a security guard of her building when he refused to run an errand of buying cigarettes for her after midnight on 25 October. Surveillance camera footage of Sharma slapping the guard has gone viral on social media.

However, Sharma has alleged that the guard assaulted her around 1 am inside her building complex after which she called the police.

The model said, the police insisted on taking her to the police station to register a complaint although she refused to go at that hour of the night. She also complained that there were no women constables. Saying she was surrounded by a lot of men and felt intimidated, Sharma stripped in front of the policemen.

“At this point of time, I can only say that no FIR has been registered in the case,” deputy commissioner of police (Zone IX) Paramjit Singh Dahiya told ThePrint.

Sharma’s statement

Tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai Police and the Bombay Times on Twitter, Sharma released a statement a day after the incident, saying, “So last night was a nightmare for me. A man assaulted me and hit on me inside my building at 1 am. Many mens were there but nobody helped me. At last I had to call the cops there.” (sic)

She added, the police reached the spot in 10 minutes after which she explained the whole scenario to them. Sharma claimed the police insisted she accompany them to the police station to file a complaint although it was very late in the night and there were no women constables among the cops.

Sharma claimed she told the police that they should speak to her lawyer and she will come to the station the next morning.

“But everyone’s out there started forcing me to come with them…I walk away to the lift area where everyone’s trying to stop me and pulling my hand to come out from the lift…,” Sharma tweeted.

“I was scared and threatened out by everyone. At last I had to do all that for which a women will think 100 and 10 times b4 doing it. Had to pull of my clothes so that after getting ashamed those guys will walk away from there…(sic) ” she added.

Sharma complained that a couple of men started filming a video of her removing her clothes and the police personnel on the spot continued to remain silent.

Speaking to ANI later, Sharma said she spoke to the security guard very politely but he called her a “characterless girl” and said they are not here to treat her like a princess.

“I was very scared, threatened by everyone and at a certain period of time my mind stopped working. And I don’t know all of a sudden what happened but I took off my clothes. That was a very bad incident of my life and has happened first time in my life,” Sharma said.

Police say model did not pursue complaint

The Mumbai Police responded to Sharma’s statement on Twitter saying a representative had spoken to her over the phone and helped her with contact numbers and a reference at the nearby Oshiwara police station. Sharma tweeted saying she plans to register a complaint.

An officer at the Oshiwara police station said Sharma never got back to the police for a complaint after that, and there is no FIR has been registered in the case. Meanwhile, the security guard submitted a complaint to the Oshiwara police station against Sharma for alleged assault.

“We haven’t filed any FIR on the security guard’s complaint yet,” the officer said.

He complained that Sharma seemed under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident on 25 October.

“A police team responded to her call and reached the spot. There was absolutely no pressure by the police on her to accompany them to the police station at night,” the guard claimed.

“She made a call to the police. We were only there to help. Someone from the team of security guards said she should go to the police station if she wanted to complain and she took her clothes off,” he added.

  1. the police was called by the premises manager upon the complaint of the guard when he complained that the lady had thrashed her. what she did afterwards was not justified, and was trying to evade responsibility of doing a criminal act.

  2. She is only responsible for this hungama, now playing the victim card. She deserves punishment for her misbehaviour with security guard as well as with Police, for public nuisance and obscenity.
