Panaji, July 24 (PTI) The opposition stalled the proceedings of the ongoing monsoon session of the Goa assembly on Thursday after State Town and Country Planning Minister Vishwajit Rane refused to reply to a question citing legal issues.

The ruckus started when the assembly resumed in the morning. Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) MLA Viresh Borkar had tabled a question concerning the constitution of the coastal state’s Town and Country Planning (TCP) Board.

Minister Rane said the answer to the question cannot be provided as the matter is subjudice. He said that he was following the rules of the House that disallow discussions on matters pending in courts.

The opposition benches, including Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, Borkar, AAP MLA Venzy Viegas, said the minister should not use any legal issue as an excuse to avoid answering the question.

“The matter about Mhadei river dispute with Karnataka was discussed in the House the day before yesterday. But it was discussed on the floor of the House because it is of public importance,” Alemao said, stressing that the question concerning TCP Board should be answered.

As the minister stuck to his stand, the opposition members from RGP, Congress, and AAP rushed to the well of the House, disrupting the proceedings.

Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, who initially tried to pacify the opposition MLAs, later adjourned the House for ten minutes. PTI RPS NR
