Jamshedpur, Oct 22 (PTI) The nominations of three candidates for the Ghatsila bypolls in Jharkhand have been rejected by the Election Commission during scrutiny, an official said on Wednesday.

The Ghatsila assembly seat in East Singhbhum fell vacant following the death of JMM sitting MLA and Jharkhand Education Minister Ramdas Soren on August 15. The polling is slated for November 11, while counting of votes will take place on November 14.

During the course of scrutiny on Wednesday, the nominations of Malti Tudu (Independent), Dukhiram Mardi (Aapki Vikash Party) and Mangal Murmu (Rashtriya Sanatan Party) were rejected, according to an official release.

Altogether, 14 candidates are now in the fray for the bypolls, with the last date of withdrawal of nomination scheduled on Thursday.

The Ghatsila assembly by-election is likely to witness a three-cornerned contest among BJP-led NDA nominee Babulal Soren, JMM’s Somesh Chandra Soren and Ramdas Murmu of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM).

Meanwhile, East Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi, who is also the returning officer for the bypolls, issued a show-cause notice to Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) candidate Ramdas Murmu for alleged violation of the model code of conduct.

Ghatsila Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sunil Chandra told PTI that the notice was issued after taking cognisance of “videos and photographs showing JLKM leader and Dumri MLA Jairam Mahato sitting on the roof of an SUV during a rally on Tuesday at Ghatsila”.

“The show-cause notice has been issued to the JLKM candidate for violation of the model code of conduct. In the permission given for the rally, it was clearly mentioned to abide by the rules of the Motor Vehicles Act… We have given 24 hours to Ramdas Murmu to reply to the notice,” Chandra said.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) and District Election Officer of Jamshedpur had on Monday night issued a statement on social media, stating that any person sitting or standing on the roof of a four-wheeler during a rally is violation of the Election Commission’s safety and code of conduct guidelines.
