Mumbai, Aug 9 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday paid tribute to martyrs on the 84th anniversary of the ‘Quit India’ Movement, saying the legacy of patriotism shown by freedom fighters continues to inspire generations.
Leaders across party lines joined in paying homage to the freedom fighters on the occasion.
School children and people from all walks of life visited the martyrs’ memorial at August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai to offer tributes.
Launched by Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai, the Quit India Movement, which began on August 9, 1942, was a decisive call to end British Rule and a turning point in the country’s freedom struggle.
CM Fadnavis in a post on X said, “On August Kranti Din, we honour the countless freedom fighters whose courage and determination during the Quit India Movement strengthened India’s march towards independence. Their legacy of patriotism continues to inspire generations.” NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar said the Quit India Movement, launched under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership with the call of “Do or Die”, marked a decisive phase in India’s struggle for independence.
The former Union minister in a post on X paid tribute to both known and unknown freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the country’s freedom struggle, noting that millions of Indians joined the movement and intensified the fight against British rule.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal also paid tribute to freedom fighters in a post on X.
He said the movement intensified the final phase of India’s struggle for independence and became a powerful expression of the people’s resolve to free the country from British rule. PTI MR GK
