New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) In a swipe at the Delhi government over widespread waterlogging in the capital following morning rain, the opposition AAP congratulated the BJP dispensation for starting free water sports in the capital.

AAP leaders shared multiple videos on social media showing waterlogging in residential and industrial areas, and targeted the government for failing to address the issue.

There was no immediate response from the BJP government to the AAP’s allegations.

Heavy rain lashed Delhi in the morning, resulting in traffic disruptions and waterlogging in several parts of the city.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Safdarjung observatory, the capital’s primary weather station, recorded 5.6 mm of rainfall between 5.30 am and 8.30 am.

Pragati Maidan recorded 16.6 mm of rainfall during this period, Pusa 10 mm, Janakpuri 9.5 mm and Najafgarh 2 mm.

Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj took to X to share a video of a woman floating in an inflated bathtub on a road.

“This boat service is not provided by the government but (I) salute the special contribution of the BJP government in Delhi,” he said.

In another post, the AAP leader shared a video of a man swimming in a waterlogged street and thanked the “four-engine government” for “free water sports”.

The rain led to waterlogging and traffic snarls across major areas, including ITO, South Extension, Nehru Place, East of Kailash, National Highway 8 and Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road.

The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for northwest and southwest Delhi and a ‘red’ alert, indicating the need for immediate action, for South and North East Delhi.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Atishi shared a video of inundated streets in east Delhi.

“Many congratulations to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for starting water sports in Delhi,” she said.

In another post about water entering a school, she said, “The BJP’s four-engine government should be ashamed. Knee-deep water has entered the municipal girls school in Tikri Kalan, but the BJP does not care. Where is the BJP’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta? Where is BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh?” Former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia shared visuals from Patparganj.

“What a mess the BJP has made of the Patparganj assembly (constituency)… BJP MLAs and their extortionist goons are busy sucking the blood of shopkeepers by asking about their caste and religion… and the entire assembly (constituency) is flooded,” he said on X.

The Public Works Department (PWD), however, said no major waterlogging was reported from the capital’s identified hotspots.

“There was no waterlogging at the Minto Bridge underpass and other critical locations,” an official said, adding that around 20 complaints were received by the flood control room.

“Mehrauli-Badarpur road, Old Rohtak road, area opposite DTC depot Nand Nagri, Okhla main road, and Ghazipur Murga Mandi were some of the areas that were waterlogged,” the official added.

Quick Response Teams (QRTs) with dewatering pumps were deployed across the city. “In some areas, there might have been minor waterlogging, but it was cleared within an hour,” the official claimed.
