Gangtok, Apr 15 (PTI) Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday said that a free and responsible press is the foundation of a vibrant democracy.

He said the Himalayan state is blessed to have a fearless and dynamic media fraternity which does its job with diligence.

“A free and responsible press is the foundation of a vibrant democracy. As Sikkim moves forward with confidence, it is heartening to see a fearless and dynamic media that informs, questions, and inspires,” he said while addressing the Golden Jubilee celebrations of leading English daily, Sikkim Express, at Manan Kendra here.

Tamang said that his government is committed to supporting journalists through various initiatives to ensure their welfare and strengthen institutions, besides empowering the evolving media landscape.

The Sikkim CM urged the media fraternity to uphold truth, responsibility, and integrity and maintained that in an age of rapid information flow, the role of journalists as guardians of truth is more important than ever.

Tamang praised the Sikkim Express for emerging as a trusted pillar of the democratic framework of the Himalayan state in its 59-year journey.

Founded by the visionary Late Ram Patro and carried forward with dedication by Amit Patro, the publication has grown into not just Sikkim’s first English daily, but also a trusted pillar of our democratic framework, the chief minister said.

“It is remarkable to complete 50 remarkable years in the service of the people and democracy of Sikkim, which is no small achievement,” he said.

Since its inception in 1976, Sikkim Express has stood as a steadfast witness to Sikkim’s journey, capturing its struggles, celebrating its achievements, and preserving its history for generations to come, Tamang added. PTI KDK RG
