Kochi, Aug 27 (PTI) Syro-Malabar Church Major Archbishop Raphael Thattil on Thursday announced Fr Thomas Animoottil as the auxiliary bishop of the Archeparchy of Kottayam.
The Archeparchy of Kottayam serves the Knanaya Catholic faithful, a community within the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.
The announcement was made by Thattil at a function held at Mount St Thomas, the headquarters of the Syro-Malabar Church, here.
According to the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CBCI), the Synod of the Syro-Malabar Major Archepiscopal Church canonically elected Fr Animoottil as auxiliary bishop.
Fr Animoottil (64) was born in Payyavoor in Kannur district and was ordained a priest in April 1989.
He obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.
Before his appointment as auxiliary bishop, he served as Pro-Protosyncellus of the Archeparchy of Kottayam.
Mar Mathew Moolakkatt is the Metropolitan Archbishop of Kottayam.
Mar Joseph Pandarasseril and Ghevarghese Mar Aphrem are the other auxiliary bishops of the Kottayam Archeparchy. PTI TBA TBA KH
