Gadag (Karnataka), Oct 10 (PTI) A former panchayat member has been killed allegedly by unidentified assailants while he was returning home in this district, police said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Basavannappa Madalageri (65), also a farmer, they said.

He was found dead on the road leading to his agricultural land, adjoining the Lakkundi-Sambhapur road in Gadag taluk of this district, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred on Friday evening. The first person to notice his body lying with injuries next to his two-wheeler was his nephew. After he informed the police, all the officers rushed to the spot.

“We received information about a murder in Lakkundi village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Gadag Rural Police Station,” a senior police officer said.

The victim had a severe injury to his head. There were also some injury marks around his neck. His mobile phone and other belongings were recovered from the surrounding crime scene, he said.

“During the preliminary investigation, it appeared that the murder might be linked to a property dispute. However, we are investigating all possible angles, and the probe is underway,” the officer said.

The questioning of suspects and the identification of the apprehended persons are underway, police said. PTI AMP ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
