Former COAS celebrates 100K Twitter followers with donation to Army welfare fund on Kargil Day

New Delhi: Former Chief of Army Staff General M.M. Naravane has donated Rs 1 lakh to the Army Central Welfare Fund to celebrate a milestone – 1 lakh Twitter followers.

Naravane presented the cheque to Lt. General C. Bansi Ponnappa on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas on Wednesday.

The ex-army staff chief shared a photo with General Ponnappa on his Twitter profile and wrote: “Let us all take a moment to reflect on the valour of our brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the Nation.”

The Army Central Welfare Fund supports personnel and their families, including the martyrs of the Indian Army. The fund has seen donations from organisations such as INOX Air Products and Lokmat in the past. Army Battle Casualties Welfare Fund is another fund managed by the Army.

Naravane wins hearts of his Twitter followers

The Additional Directorate General of Public Information of Army retweeted the post and lauded the former COAS for “exemplifying the spirit of camaraderie & brotherhood towards the bravehearts of Kargil War”.

In an earlier tweet, Naravane extended his gratitude to his social media friends for making him achieve one lakh followers. He wrote: “Have decided to donate 100K to the Army Central Welfare Fund as a mark of respect on behalf of you all.”

Naravane’s supporters have called him the perfect example of a true soldier and one of the finest Army chiefs the country has had. Naravane now has 102.4K followers on Twitter.

Known for his humble and professional conduct, General Naravane had previously given medical equipment and medicines to the Nepal army during his tenure as Army chief in 2020.

Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations at Dras memorial

On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas Wednesday, Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the three service chiefs of the Army (COAS), the Air Force (CAS) and the Navy (CNS), paid homage to the martyrs of Kargil War at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras.

The ADG-PI of Army posted photos of General Anil Chauhan (CDS), General Manoj Pande (COAS) Admiral R. Hari Kumar (CNS), and Air Chief Marshal V.R. Chaudhari (CAS) at the memorial to express their “everlasting gratitude towards the selfless sacrifice of the valiant & courageous Kargil soldiers”.

On 26 July 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of “Operation Vijay” signifying India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil mountain range. Every year, the day is celebrated to mark the indomitable courage of the country’s soldiers.
