Bhubaneswar, Jun 24 (PTI) Five inmates of a prison here have been admitted to hospitals with complaints of severe illness after taking medicines, officials said on Wednesday.

According to jail sources, the health of the inmates of the Jharpada Jail deteriorated on Tuesday night, with some prisoners allegedly frothing at the mouth.

They were immediately rushed to Capital Hospital, and two of them were later shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

Jharpada jail superintendent Sarbeswar Sahoo said, “The health condition of the prisoners, including some under-trials, deteriorated suddenly after having medicines.” “We immediately shifted the inmates to hospitals, and one of them has been discharged. The health condition of the other four inmates is stable now.” He ruled out the possibility of the inmates having consumed narcotics and said, “We have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining the CCTV footage.” “Senior police officers visited the jail last night, and an inquiry was underway. Further details would be known after completion of the probe,” he added.

Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena visited the inmates at the hospitals last night to ensure proper security of the prisoners.

“Some are feeling drowsy, while some others were unconscious. The exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained,” he had informed reporters. PTI BBM BBM NSD
