New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, registering her protest over the new amendments to the farm laws and seeking urgent redressal on the matter.

In her letter, Mamata stressed on how the new laws, which have drawn ire from other states as well, particularly Punjab, take away the state’s power over regulation of essential commodities, thus leading to more hoarding and profiteering in the food supply chain.

She also called on the Centre to step in and control hoarding of vegetables such as potato and onions, which would in turn increase supply and bring down prices of essential commodities. If not, she asked that states be empowered to control production, supply, distribution and sale of agricultural commodities.
