New Delhi/Kochi May 3 (PTI) Family members of B Sashidharan, a naval sailor from Kerala who died in action during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, paid tribute at the National War Memorial in New Delhi in his honour, a defence spokesperson said on Sunday.

A statement from the defence spokesperson said that Sasidharan’s wife Ponnamma P and son Sujith Kumar S visited the memorial years later to pay homage to his sacrifice.

“The occasion also served as a poignant reminder of the courage displayed by the Indian Armed Forces in the line of duty,” the spokesperson said.

Sashidharan, a native of Kollam district, was among the brave sailors aboard INS Khukri, which was sunk in a torpedo attack by a Pakistani submarine during the 1971 India-Pakistan war on December 9, 1971.

Despite grave danger and adverse circumstances, he displayed exceptional courage and resilience while fighting to save the ship, the spokesperson said.

“During the challenging mission, Sashidharan continued his efforts with unwavering determination before laying down his life in the service of the nation. His sacrifice continues to stand as a testament to the indomitable dedication and bravery of India’s naval personnel,” the statement said.

The family’s visit to the National War Memorial underscored the nation’s enduring gratitude for the legacy and unparalleled sacrifice of its fallen soldiers, the spokesperson said.

Personnel from the armed forces based in New Delhi were also present at the ceremony, the statement added. PTI TBA TBA ADB
