Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jan 17 (PTI) A special MP/MLA court on Tuesday acquitted 16 people, including former BJP MLA Umesh Malik, in connection with an attack on a meat factory in the district in 2006. Special Judge Gopal Upadhyaya acquitted Malik, RSS leaders Omkar Singh, Sanjay Aggarwal, Rajiv Mittal, and others due to lack of evidence.

Malik represented Budhana seat of Muzaffarnagar from 2017 to 2022. According to government counsel Arun Sharma, Al Noor meat factory was set on fire and vehicles were vandalised on August 21, 2006. He said activists of Hindu organisations had created a ruckus after demanding the closure of the factory located on Jansath Marg. Vehicles were stopped and a ‘havan’ was performed at the factory gate. The protesters had also attacked police and indulged in arson, the lawyer added. Police had registered a case against 20 people and one of the accused, Mohan Baba, died during the course of trial. Out of these, three people had absconded and the remaining 16 were facing the trial.
