New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended people working for the protection of wildlife on World Wildlife Day on Wednesday, and said that everything possible should be done to preserve forests and safe habitats for animals.
On the occasion, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu called for putting in dedicated efforts to save and preserve the wildlife and create greater awareness on the need to maintain a healthy ecological balance on the planet.
Modi tweeted, I salute all those working towards wildlife protection. Be it lions, tigers and leopards, India is seeing a steady rise in the population of various animals. We should do everything possible to ensure protection of our forests and safe habitats for animals.”
This call by the PM should not remain just lip service . If he really means what he says Mr Modi could do the following things immediately
call off the Ken-Betwa interlink project that cuts the Panna Tiger reserve in half
Repeal all dams projects in glaciated regions of the Uttarakhand and Himachal States, as was done by Pranab Mukherjee for the Gangotri Region.
call an urgent conference of Peninsular States and get their commitment to observing the safeguards mandated by the Gadgil Report on the Western Ghats
Stop the 6 laning of the Delhi Dehra Dun route which will cut a huge swath through the Terai forests.
Accept the CHopra Committee report on scrapping of the original planned width of roads on the Char Dham route
Place the Pancheswar dam project on hold , as tis will be three times as destructive as the Tehri dam.
Citizens will eagerly look forward to the PM making good his call for forest preservation.
