Raigarh (Chhattisgarh), Jun 16 (PTI) An elephant died after being struck by a goods train while crossing a railway track used for coal transportation in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district, forest officials said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at around 10 pm on Monday near Chargaon village in the Gharghoda area when a herd of elephants was crossing a railway track, Divisional Forest Officer PM Arvind said.

The female elephant, aged about 40 years, was struck by the passing goods train and suffered severe injuries. The impact caused serious damage to its hind legs, leading to excessive bleeding, he said.

After receiving information from villagers, forest personnel rushed to the spot and initiated treatment of the injured elephant during the night. A team of veterinarians made every possible effort to save the jumbo, but it succumbed to its injuries during treatment on Tuesday morning, Arvind said.

The forest department has registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. PTI COR TKP GK
